Cyanotyping Camera

This is an analog cyanotyping camera, built with my partner Milin Tun, for MIT class 4.031, Objects and Interaction

The camera, titled “On Hold” requires the user to place their phone into a holding slot. This holder rotates and depresses a lever, which reveals the lens. The lens projects the image that the camera is pointed at onto a cyanotype-treated index card.

The camera requires the user to leave their phone in the camera for the image to be exposed, taking approximately 2-3 hours. Removing the phone early will cause the image to disappear when washing. This object trades phone use for an image created through mindfulness.

Photographs

These are two examples of photographs we took with our camera - they requires between 3-4 hours of exposure time. The image projection is pictured above each developed photograph.

Design Iterations

We prototyped multiple methods of translating user input into opening the phone cover. Before settling on the lever design, our other concept utilized a string pully system and tambor slats that roller upwards.
